Inside Levante Unión Deportiva SAD: Identity, Stadium and Rivalries

A practical introduction to the club behind the fixtures: what the colours mean, where home matches feel different and which dates carry extra weight.

Club identity

Levante's Granota Story Began with Two Clubs

Levante trace their roots to Levante FC and Gimnástico FC, both founded in Valencia in 1909 and merged in 1939. Granotas, the Frogs, became the lasting supporter identity, while the blue-and-claret colours preserve the Gimnástico side of the merged club's history.

Home matchday

Ciutat de València Has Been the Orriols Home Since 1969

The current ground opened in September 1969 and later took the name Ciutat de València to strengthen its connection with the city. It sits in the Orriols area rather than beside Mestalla, an important distinction for visitors planning the correct route across Valencia.

Derbi del Turia

Levante vs Valencia

Levante and Valencia contest the city's main derby, often called the Derbi del Turia. The relationship reaches back through both clubs' old grounds: Valencia were invited to open Levante's present stadium in 1969, just as Levante had been the guest when Mestalla opened in 1923.
