Real Madrid won La Liga 2023/24 with 95 points, ten more than Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti's side lost once in 38 games and allowed only 26 goals, the best defensive record by 11. Girona's 81-point third place was the season's great breakthrough.

The top has two striking gaps. Madrid were ten ahead of Barcelona; Athletic in fifth were eight behind Atlético. Girona sat in between the established contenders, only four points from second and five above fourth. Their +39 difference was better than Barcelona's despite finishing below them.

At the other end, Rayo's 38 points were enough for seventeenth, five above Cádiz. The safe middle immediately above Rayo was compressed: Celta and Sevilla had 41, Mallorca and Las Palmas 40. Celta ranked above Sevilla despite a worse overall goal difference, a reminder that La Liga's head-to-head rules can decide equal-point order before aggregate goal difference.

The qualification labels belong specifically to the 2024/25 UEFA access created by this finish and Spain's cup outcome. They are not a generic promise attached to every season's same position. How Real Madrid won the title with 95 points

Real Madrid's championship case begins with its floor: one defeat in 38 matches. The attack led the league with 87 goals, but conceding only 26 made an average attacking day survivable. Ancelotti could change the midfield and defensive personnel without changing the team's ability to stay inside a match.

Jude Bellingham altered the shape after arriving from Dortmund. Rather than replace Karim Benzema with a like-for-like centre-forward, Madrid often used Bellingham as the most advanced midfielder behind Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo. His runs arrived after defenders had turned toward the ball. Toni Kroos controlled the first phase, Federico Valverde covered large spaces, and Eduardo Camavinga or Aurélien Tchouaméni added ball-winning and flexibility.

That adaptability mattered amid defensive absences. Madrid protected the centre, accepted phases without the ball and relied on individual recovery speed or goalkeeper saves when the line broke. Twenty-six conceded was not simply a goalkeeper statistic. It came from controlling where opponents could progress and keeping enough midfield protection around changing centre-back combinations.

The results against direct rivals converted control into separation. Madrid beat Girona 3-0 at Montilivi and 4-0 at the Bernabéu, scoring seven without reply against the eventual third-place side. They also swept Barcelona. In October, Bellingham erased a 1-0 deficit with a long-range equaliser and a stoppage-time winner. In April, Madrid twice came from behind before Bellingham scored in the 91st minute for a 3-2 win and an 11-point lead with six games left.

The title became official on 4 May. Brahim Díaz, Bellingham and Joselu scored in a 3-0 home win over Cádiz, lifting Madrid to 87. Barcelona then had to win at Girona to extend the race but lost 4-2. Madrid were champions after Matchday 34 with four rounds still to play and finished at 95.

Only Atlético Madrid defeated them in league play. That one-loss total shows the difference between brilliance and repeatability: Madrid did not need to dominate every hour of every match. They avoided turning difficult away games or tired performances into defeats, then used elite transition threat and late arrivals to win decisive contests.

Girona's historic third-place season

Girona finished third with 81 points in only the club's fourth La Liga season. It was not a brief autumn surprise that faded into seventh. Míchel's team won 25 matches, scored 85 goals and ended five points above Atlético. The reward was Girona's first UEFA campaign—and it began in the Champions League proper.

Their football combined patience and sudden verticality. Aleix García organised possession from the base, switching play toward wide players when opponents crowded one side. Miguel Gutiérrez stepped from left-back into midfield or advanced between lines. Sávio stretched and beat defenders, Viktor Tsygankov attacked the opposite channel, and Artem Dovbyk gave the moves a powerful central endpoint.

That made Girona difficult to label. They could build slowly enough to invite an opponent forward, then play through the newly opened space in two passes. Opta counted 13 build-up goals from open-play sequences containing at least ten passes, the most in Europe's top five leagues at the time of its Champions League qualification analysis. Yet the purpose was never possession for decoration. Míchel repeatedly demanded vertical play when the opening appeared.

Dovbyk converted that structure into 24 goals and eight assists. He pinned centre-backs, finished crosses and also set the ball for third-man runners. His contribution was decisive, but Girona were not a one-player counterattack. García's distribution, the width of Sávio and Yan Couto, and intelligent rotations around the left half-space created multiple paths into the box.

The landmark results were both 4-2 wins over Barcelona. At Montjuïc in December, Girona proved they could carry their idea into a major away match. The May home victory came from behind, guaranteed Champions League qualification and helped make Madrid champions on the same day. Girona also beat Atlético 4-3 at Montilivi and closed the league by defeating Granada 7-0, the club's biggest professional win.

Madrid exposed the ceiling by winning the two meetings 3-0 and 4-0. Girona's brave spacing could leave the defence facing elite transitions, and their 46 conceded was much higher than Madrid's 26. That does not diminish third; it explains why a spectacular attack challenged the duopoly without sustaining the champion's defensive level.

Eighty-one points was, according to Girona, the highest La Liga total achieved at that time by a club other than Madrid, Barcelona or Atlético. The deeper legacy was permission: a smaller top-flight history did not require a smaller tactical idea. European qualification and the stories behind fifth to tenth

Athletic Club were the clear best side outside the top four. Fifth place, 68 points and only 37 conceded paired with a Copa del Rey triumph. Ernesto Valverde's team could press with energy, attack through Nico and Iñaki Williams and still protect the centre. Unai Simón won the Zamora Trophy for the best goals-conceded ratio, the first Athletic goalkeeper to do so in more than 50 years.

Winning the cup and finishing fifth removed any ambiguity around Europe: Athletic entered the 2024/25 Europa League. More importantly, the league total was 17 points better than 2022/23 and the club's best in ten seasons. The cup supplied catharsis; the 38-match record showed the improvement was repeatable.

Real Sociedad took the other Europa League place in sixth with 60. Their 39 conceded was excellent, behind only Madrid and Athletic, but 51 scored limited the ceiling. Imanol Alguacil's side balanced a Champions League campaign with another European finish. Twelve draws show the narrow line: defensive control preserved points, while an extra attacking action could have turned several into wins.

Betis finished seventh on 57 and went to the Conference League. No team drew more than their 15. Manuel Pellegrini's side remained difficult to dismiss, yet the repeated single points left them three behind Sociedad. This was the middle ground between resilience and missed opportunity.

Villarreal's 53-point eighth was the table's most obvious volatility. They scored 65—the same as their 65 conceded. Alexander Sørloth's goals and an improved finish restored momentum, but the zero goal difference explains why a top-four-quality attack did not produce European qualification. Every additional attacking risk had to compensate for defensive instability.

Valencia finished ninth on 49 with one of the league's younger groups. Forty goals were modest, yet the side moved far from the previous campaign's final-day survival stress. The value was not a title chase; it was rebuilding competitive habits around academy players while avoiding another relegation emergency.

Promoted Alavés completed the top half on 46. Their −10 difference and 36 goals show a practical rather than glamorous route. Home competitiveness and defensive organisation created a ten-point cushion over the drop. A promoted club finishing tenth is a successful adaptation even when the raw attacking totals are low.

These positions should be read as outcomes, not identical grades. Athletic were ready to challenge the Champions League places; Sociedad and Betis preserved continental continuity; Villarreal had elite attacking moments without balance; Valencia and Alavés moved their projects forward. The 2023/24 relegation battle

Three Andalusian clubs went down, but the relegation line split into two levels. Cádiz stayed in contact with safety and finished on 33; Almería and Granada were detached on 21. Rayo survived in seventeenth with 38, so the final cushion was five points.

Cádiz's season was defined by scarcity. Twenty-six goals were the league's lowest total, three fewer than Rayo. Fifteen draws repeatedly preserved hope without moving the club above the line. Cádiz entered the bottom three on Matchday 20 and never escaped; a 0-0 home draw with Las Palmas in the penultimate round mathematically ended four consecutive seasons in the top flight.

The defensive figures explain why Almería and Granada could not make a late race. Almería scored 43—17 more than Cádiz—but conceded 75 and did not win until Matchday 29. All three victories arrived in the last ten rounds, including a surreal 6-1 finale against already-relegated Cádiz. That late output showed talent after the outcome was effectively lost; it could not repair eight winless months.

Granada returned to the second tier after one season. They occupied a relegation place from Matchday 6, lost 25 games and conceded a league-high 79. The final 7-0 defeat at Girona crystallised the imbalance. Granada finished twentieth below Almería despite a better win total and a worse overall goal difference; equal-point teams follow La Liga's tiebreak ordering, so goal difference alone cannot be used to switch them.

Rayo's 38 also corrects the idea that 40 points are always mandatory. The survival target is produced by the group. In this campaign Cádiz's low scoring prevented them from placing sustained pressure on Rayo, while Almería and Granada were too far back to pull the line upward.

The common lesson is penalty-box efficiency at both ends. Cádiz defended enough matches to draw but lacked goals; Almería had more attack but allowed far too many; Granada combined low output with the weakest defence. Artem Dovbyk won the Pichichi with 24 goals, one ahead of Alexander Sørloth. The race changed twice in the final eight days and was not settled until Villarreal's last match.

Sørloth had surged into contention with four goals against Real Madrid on Matchday 37. Dovbyk responded first on the final weekend. He began on 21 and scored three in Girona's 7-0 win over Granada, two from penalties, moving to 24. Sørloth then needed to score at Osasuna but left after 17 minutes with an injury. His total stayed at 23.

The award completed Girona's collective story. Dovbyk did not merely wait in the six-yard box: his 24 goals came with eight assists, and his ability to pin a defender allowed Sávio, Tsygankov and midfield runners to combine around him. Opta recorded 32 direct goal involvements, behind only three players across Europe's big five leagues.

Sørloth supplied a different profile. He scored 23 without a penalty, used power in transition and finished a remarkable 34-match campaign for an eighth-place side. The one-goal deficit should not erase how efficiently he carried Villarreal's uneven attack.

Bellingham and Lewandowski shared 19 but occupied different jobs. Lewandowski remained Barcelona's penalty-area reference. Bellingham arrived from midfield, scored both winners in the Clásicos and was voted LALIGA player of the season. That award did not contradict Dovbyk's Pichichi: one recognises total season performance through voting, the other recognises the highest goal total.

Budimir's 17 kept Osasuna supplied, while Atlético placed both Griezmann and Morata in the top ten. Mayoral reached 15 for a lower-scoring Getafe before a serious knee injury ended his campaign, and Vinícius reached the same total while missing matches.
